Why Was The First Modern Air Conditioning System Created?

Both in summer and in winter, air conditioning systems are necessary for regulating temperature, regulating humidity and ensuring everyone in a residential building, office or industrial complex is as comfortable as possible.

However, this was not the reason for the creation of the first modern air conditioning system by Willis Carrier in 1902.

Air conditioning systems in some rudimentary forms have existed since Ancient Egypt using passive techniques and experiments in artificial freezing techniques using substances such as potassium nitrate, but Mr Carrier’s system was the first that used electricity.

After developing an effective test unit, Mr Carrier’s first customer was a Brooklyn-based Publishing and Lithography company by the name of Sackett-Wilhelms.

Paper and ink are two materials that are affected by humidity and temperature, which can lead to misalignments and dimension issues that need to be fixed painstakingly before orders can go out.

An air conditioning unit fixed this by providing a carefully controlled environment that allowed all of the components to work effectively.

This system worked so well that Mr Carrier would eventually form a company now known as Carrier Global.

The term itself came from another pioneer in the field. Stuart Cramer wanted more humidity for his textile processing plant, and used a similar system to humidate the air, eventually coining the term “air conditioning”.

It would take 12 years for the first air conditioning unit to be installed in a home, although it is likely that nobody got the chance to enjoy it.

Charles Gates was the son of John “Bet-A-Million” Gates, a barbed wire magnate who had a seat on the New York Stock Exchange.

On his way home from New York City to Minneapolis, Minnesota where his house was being constructed, he died suddenly in his sleep in Cody, Wyoming.

His home was finished regardless, with an air conditioning unit fitted that was the first ever fitted to a residential building, even if nobody was around to enjoy it.
